The results obtained with the GASP array in the mass region are reviewed, emphasizing the study of excited highly deformed bands and their decay out, the discovery of chiral doublet bands in the odd-odd Pr nuclei and of stable triaxial bands in Nd nuclei close to the N = 82 shell closure. The very recent studies of nuclei near the proton drip line are described. A discussion of the origin of the various doublet bands observed in odd-odd nuclei of the
mass region is presented.
