A measure for triaxiality from K (shape) invariants

We show that the cubic shape invariant K3, which provides a measure for triaxiality for β-rigid nuclei, can be obtained from a small number of observables. This affords approximations which have been tested to hold within a few percent in the rigid triaxial rotor model and the interacting boson model.
