Total reaction cross sections were deduced for 6,7Li on 28Si, 58Ni, 120Sn, 208Pb at near-barrier energies, adopting a new method based on elastic backscattering excitation functions. The results are compared with direct measurements, optical model calculations, predictions via a global parameterization as well as predictions in a one-barrier penetration model. Reaction cross sections obtained with the new method present systematically a reduction of the order of ∼ 10% to 20% with the larger deviations to be observed for the lighter targets. The sensitivity of the method is explored and discussed.
