The cross sections for radiative neutron capture by the 5 stable even-mass isotopes of natural selenium have been measured by observation of the rays emitted by the 7 radioactive isomeric and ground states produced following neutron capture. By irradiating the Se samples in reactor sites having different compositions of thermal and epithermal neutrons, consistent values of the thermal cross sections and resonance integrals have been obtained. Systematic variations in the deduced cross sections have been minimized by observing in each sample the decays of several different Se nuclides, thus providing overlapping and redundant values for comparison. The half-life of 79mSe has been measured to be 3.884(9)h. Ratios of cross sections of isomeric and ground states in 77, 79, 81, 83Se are compared with a statistical model.
